Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has assured Bangwe residents whose homes were destroyed by heavy rains on November 17 this year of humanitarian support to recover from the disaster.
Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhomwa said this when he visited the affected homes in the township on Saturday.
He said: “Member of Parliament [MP] for Blantyre Bangwe told me in Parliament that infrastructure in his constituency has been badly damaged by heavy rains. When I informed the President, he directed that my ministry donate maize and kitchenware. Since the number of victims is on the rise, we will assist all the affected. ”
Nankhumwa said it is government’s wish to help its citizens in times of disasters and they should look forward to more support from government.
500 people were targeted with 20 kilogrammes (kgs) of maize each, plastic cups and pails among others.
MP for the area Davie Kadzinja hailed the President for the timely assistance.
He said: “We are grateful for the assistance. You have demonstrated that you have our welfare at heart.” n
