Govt for effective postal services in Sadc—Kunkuyu
Malawi Government says there is need for the postal sector in the Sadc Region to upgrade its infrastructure to ensure adequate and effective response to the needs of people.
Minister of Information and Civic Education Moses Kunkuyu, said this on Wednesday at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi, when he opened the 12th Annual General Meeting for Southern Africa Postal Operators Association (Sapoa).
He said governments, especially those in the Sadc region, need to align themselves with the global postal plan and determine what could be done to offer postal financial services to the unbanked population.
Said Kunkuyu: “While it is universally accepted that the volumes of letter-post items are on the decline globally, it is interestingly evident that the postal financial services and courier are growing almost exponentially.
“It is my hope now that this gathering will focus on cross-border money transfer services in addition to the domestic ones so that the diaspora money could be covered.”
The minister, therefore, urged the postal sector, Malawi inclusive, to speed up the rollout of physical addressing system.
In his remarks, Malawi Posts Corporation (MPC) board chairperson Jimmy Koreia Mpatsa said public postal operators face challenges despite making headway in diversifying their product portfolios and embracing technology to improve quality services.
“Currently, MPC is in the process of implementing a counter automation programme, which is aimed at modernising our operations and improving efficiency with the view of improving our customer service,” he said.
