Minister of Industry and Trade Joseph Mwanamvekha has assured local cement manufacturers that government will protect local companies through deliberate policies to discourage imports.
Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of Thanthwe cement and relaunch of Buildplast cement brands by Shayona Cement Corporation Limited in Lilongwe on Monday, Mwanamvekha said:”My ministry has noted with concern the proliferation of smuggled goods, especially cement products, into the country.
“These importers are evading taxes thereby manipulating competition on the domestic market.”
On his part, Shayona Cement Corporation managing director Jitendra Patel bemoaned the influx of substandard cement products, saying the imports are hurting local producers such as Shayona.
Patel said cement is staying for over 10 days in trucks and warehouses after production as sales have gone down. n
