Government has pledged to start constructing a new stadium in Blantyre during the next financial year.

Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe said this yesterday when he presented the 2017/18 Budget Statement in Parliament.

Kamuzu Stadium is crumbling

“The [current structure] of the Kamuzu Stadium will be demolished to pave the way for the construction of a new one,” he said.

The minister also announced an increased allocation to Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) of 60 percent to K1 752.0 billion.

“It is being proposed, for example, that Malawi should start professional football activities that will be offered at various youth centres, including the youth centre in Lilongwe, which will be rehabilitated extensively and in Blantyre and  Mzuzu where other centres will be constructed,” said Gondwe.

Kamuzu Stadium is in a dilapidated state and was barred by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) from hosting matches, a situation that has created a venue crisis in the Southern Region.
