Govt undertakes to solve local transporters’ woes

Government has said it is aware that international hauliers take up most of the business that could have been done by locals, a development that is affecting their growth.

Ministry of Transport and Public Works principal economist Chimwemwe Kaunda said government is coming up with deliberate policies to protect local hauliers to safeguard their businesses.Trucks-at-border

“In other countries such as Zimbabwe and Zambia preference in carrying goods is first given to local transporters and there is need to have a similar policy here. This is not a simple matter, but we will seriously look into it,” he said in an interview last week.

Kaunda was reacting to complaints by Road Transport Operators Association (Rtoa) that about 90 percent of goods are transported by foreign hauliers.

Rtoa executive director Chrissie Flao in a separate  interview last week urged local transporters to work in partnership if they are to attract more business.

“Sometimes one transporter can have more than two contracts to undertake and does not share with colleagues, this is not good,” she said.
