Govt urges rollout of home and away roaming

Listen to this article

Government has asked Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) and mobile phone operators to implement the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) ministerial directive on home and away roaming.

The call comes against the background that Malawi, alongside six other Sadc countries, have failed to meet the September 2016 deadline to fully implement the project.

Mwafulirwa: We have engaged them

The project aims at bringing affordable mobile roaming services within the region through policy and regulatory framework interventions.

Minister of Information and Communications Technologies Nicholas Dausi, in an interview on Monday, said regulators and mobile phone operators should make implementation of the project a success.

Mobile phone operators could not respond to our questions, but Macra communications manager Clara Mwafulirwa said they have engaged TNM and Airtel Malawi to fasttrack the agreed stages of implementing the price ceilings.

She said Macra has adopted a fortnight monitoring plan to follow up with TNM and Airtel on the progress of their negotiations and a deadline of end March has been set to ensure that all negotiations are concluded.
