Great mothers of Malawi to be awarded

Twelve great mothers of Malawi will be awarded for their contributions and efforts towards the development of the country, as part of the Sunbird Sand Music Festival next week.

The special gala night event takes place on the Mothers’ Day eve during the festival that runs from October 12 to 15 at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi.

“These mothers will be awarded the 2012 Great Mothers Achievement Award. This award is the beginning of many awards that will be awarded in the years to follow at similar events,” said Dawa Loga Lemberger for the organisers.

The list includes the most powerful woman in Africa and President Joyce Banda for her role in politics and women empowerment through NABW and her Joyce Banda Foundation; Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda’s official hostess Cecelia Tamanda Kadzamira for her charity work; Malawi’s first female lawyer Vera Chirwa; Rose Chibambo; the woman at the helm of Malawi’s three democratic elections, Justice Anastasia Msosa and the first black female managing director at Toyota Malawi Rose Mkandawire.

Others are philanthropist Sakkar Sacranie, Mai Dinala, who was the second in command in the women national league in MCP and has ever remained loyal to her party, Felicity Malewezi for her charitable work, Marie De Silva for her selfless contributions in uplifting orphaned children through her Jacaranda Foundation and Maria Chidzanja Nkhoma for her role in music and broadcasting.

Posthumously, Mrs Dossani who is the founder of the Dossani Trust established 1986 and has benefited a lot of people through charity work.
