Grief as two people drown in a well
Grief engulfed residents of Chinsapo in Lilongwe following tragic deaths of two women who drowned in a deep well yesterday.
Another unidentified woman is undergoing treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) after she fell into the yawning well as she tried to rescue her departed friends.
Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula said it all started with a sandal of a 17-year old girl, Chimwemwe Kamtchetera, falling into the well as she swept the surrounding of the family compound.
Dandaula said Kamtchetera decided to go into the well to retrieve it.
“But since the well was too deep, she ended up drowning. And in an effort to save the life of the girl, a 30-year old woman, Masautso Sipokosi, went into the well and she also drowned,” he said.
Dandaula further stated that an unidentified woman also attempted to rescue the two women, but she also fell into the well.
However, the community came in quickly to pull her out of the well using a rope.
“She is currently receiving treatment at KCH,” he said.
Dandaula said postmortem results showed that Chimwemwe and Sipokosi died of suffocation. n
