Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula said it all started with a sandal of a 17-year old girl, Chimwemwe Kamtchetera, falling into the well as she swept the surrounding of the family compound.

Dandaula said Kamtchetera decided to go into the well to retrieve it.

“But since the well was too deep, she ended up drowning. And in an effort to save the life of the girl, a 30-year old woman, Masautso Sipokosi, went into the well and she also drowned,” he said.

Dandaula further stated that an unidentified woman also attempted to rescue the two women, but she also fell into the well.

However, the community came in quickly to pull her out of the well using a rope.

“She is currently receiving treatment at KCH,” he said.

Dandaula said  postmortem results showed that Chimwemwe and  Sipokosi died of suffocation. n
