Mabulabo Community Development Council has donated 70 mattresses worth K2 million to Kanyika Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Mzimba District.

In an interview, the group’s chairperson Ken Mthunzi said they donated the mattresses after learning that girls were sleeping on mats.

“The situation was affecting the girls academically as they were not motivated to learn,” he said.

Mthunzi said the group’s members, formerly known as Friends of Mabulabo, contributed towards the initiative to motivate the girls to work hard in class.

Kanyika CDSS head girl Nellia Mwale commended the group, saying they were not comfortable sleeping on the floor.

“Sleeping on mattresses will bring the needed comfort during study at night or at dawn,” she said.

Senior Chief Mabulabo asked school management and students to take good care of the mattresses.

“These mattresses are meant for school use, especially by girl learners. We do not want these mattresses to be found at teachers’ houses,” he said.

In an interview, Northern division education manager Mzondi Moyo appealed to other well-wishers to emulate the example set by Mabulabo Community Development Council.

Kanyika CDSS has 77 boys and 67 girls.

The group has been implementing activities in Senior Chief Mabulabo, including the construction of school blocks and donating desks.
