Gulewamkulu wounds toddler in Nkhotakota
Police in Nkhotakota have arrested a member of the Gulewamkulu cult for unlawfully wounding a three-year old girl in the district.
According to Nkhotakota Police Station spokesperson Williams Kaponda, the dancer wounded the girl during a traditional ceremony on January 3 at Kapenda Village in Senior Traditional Authority (T/A) Malengachanzi in the district.
He said the Kamano dancer, identified as Pilirani Ching’oma, 27, was among performers at Kapenda Village.
“Ching’oma’s turn came and to his frustration, a group of women who were singing for the dancers did not sing for him as they did for his colleagues,” he said.
Police reports indicate that the suspect started chasing the singers and spectators while threatening them with a spear which landed on the toddler’s left foot.
When Ching’oma realised that he had injured a child, he started running away but he was apprehended by the spectators who unmasked him and handed him to police.
Ching’oma, who comes from Khufu Village T/A Malengachanzi in the district, is expected to appear before court soon to answer to the charge of unlawful wounding. n
