Gwamba launches sports tourney

Born Duncan Zgambo, the artist lived in the area for 13 years and nurtured his music skills there.

As one way of giving back to the community as well as getting idle youths busy, the musician launched 30-day netball and football tournaments at Chatuwa Primary School ground in Area 18B.

Said Gwamba: “We have 16 teams all participating on a knock out basis to November 30. K700 000 is for football while K300 000 is for netball. The youth tournament is aimed at developing talent, making sure the youth have something to do to stay away from immoral conduct. You never know; we might have the next Gaba [Frank Mhango] or Mwawi Kumwenda [among them].

“We had a committee that scrutinised all the teams showing interest to participate. All those with a bad record of hooliganism, for example, were not considered. We want to instil discipline in the youth who are future leaders.”

On the final day of the tournament, there will be music performances by Gwamba and a number of other musicians.

Guest of honour and ward councillor for Chimutu, which includes Area 18 and 30, Akwame Bandawe, hailed the tournament as the step in the right direction in as far as keeping youths away from immoral acts is concerned.

He said: “Chimutu Ward has over 4 000 youths and a majority of these will benefit from the tournament. Mostly, youths in the country have little or nothing to do in terms of employment of skills development.

“After school, they now have something to keep them busy in the afternoon. As such, we will continue lobbying from individuals and companies to do more.”
