Unsung boxer Bryson Gwayani stunned Malawi Defence Force (MDF) boxer Salimu Chazama with a third-round knockout in a non-title bout on Sunday at M1 Centre Point in Lilongwe.

Chazama went into the ring as the favourite and had vowed to end Gwayani’s career prior to the fight.

But it was a reality check on Sunday as Gwayani fought supremely with hard precise punches that found their target.

Gwayani (R) was too good for Chazama (L)

Gwayani made his intent clear in the first round when his powerful left jab forced Chazama to the canvas, but he managed to beat the count

Gwayani continued his onslaught on Chazama in the second round with solid left and right punches pummelling his opponent without mercy.

Buoyed by the crowd, Gwayani upped his game in the third round and evidently sought a knockout which he got it before the scheduled 10 rounds.

“I could not see him from the first round. Sometimes I could see two reflections of Gwayani. It confused my game,” said a clearly humiliated Chazama after the fight.

On his part, Gwayani said he never doubted that he would come out triumphant.

“He [Chazama] is not a good boxer as people think. He boasts too much, but he is not skilled. I don’t think he will ever seek a rematch after such a lesson. I am happy that I have proved myself and I am ready to take on any boxer,”

Gwayani’s record now stands at 25 wins, no loss and two draws while Chazama has 26 wins and four losses.

The bout was organised by Ngwenyama Boxing Promotions and sanctioned by Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB).
