A hailstorm on Monday damaged buildings in Nkhata Bay.

The windy rains left about 100 people homeless at Mpamba Trading Centre and surrounding villages.

District disaster management officer Oswel Mkandawire said Nkhata Bay District Council officials were still counting families affected.

One of the homes wrecked on Monday

“By Monday, 70 houses had been counted and the victims are being accommodated by those whose houses withstood the storm,” he said.

The assessment was disrupted by a downpour.

Timbiri Area Development Committee (ADC) chairperson John Chunda said the survivors will need relief items, especially shelter and food.

“The situation is so bad. People have lost homes, shops, churches and other structures. It is even harder to rebuild the houses with rains. Some people got injured after bricks fell on them,” he said.
