HAM makes Independence Day hockey permanent

Independence Day hockey games are from this year a permanent feature on the domestic annual calendar, the Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) general secretary Krishna Achuthan has announced.

HAM hosted the inaugural games over two days from July 6 at the Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) to join the countrwide 48th Independence Anniversary Celebrations.

Achuthan on Tueasday said they decided to launch the games this year to celebrate President Joyce Banda’s ascendancy as the first female President in southern Africa and the second on the continent.

“The games will be held every year. We are commemorating that we have a woman President,” said Achuthan.

During the BSC games, Scorpions were the standout performers for the men’s side whereas Sports Complex Simba impressed in the women’s category.

According to The Daily Times of July 8, Barloworld and Group One Security sponsored the games that had men’s winner pocketing K75 000 (about $300) with K50 000 (about $200) for the women’s side.
