Independence Day hockey games are from this year a permanent feature on the domestic annual calendar, the Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) general secretary Krishna Achuthan has announced.
HAM hosted the inaugural games over two days from July 6 at the Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) to join the countrwide 48th Independence Anniversary Celebrations.
Achuthan on Tueasday said they decided to launch the games this year to celebrate President Joyce Bandaâ€™s ascendancy as the first female President in southern Africa and the second on the continent.
“The games will be held every year. We are commemorating that we have a woman President,” said Achuthan.
During the BSC games, Scorpions were the standout performers for the menâ€™s side whereas Sports Complex Simba impressed in the womenâ€™s category.
According to The Daily Times of July 8, Barloworld and Group One Security sponsored the games that had menâ€™s winner pocketing K75 000 (about $300) with K50 000 (about $200) for the womenâ€™s side.
