HAM postpones international tourney

The Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) has postponed a four-day international tournament that was supposed to take place from today to Monday after the visiting Zambian teams withdrew from the tournament.

Tigers Hockey Club of Lusaka Zambia was supposed to send their men and ladies teams, but withdrew on Tuesday.

The teams’ official, Thomas Mumba, e-mailed, saying they have failed to show up due to financial constraints.

“I have done everything human to see to it that this trip takes off, but I think I have reached the dead end. I am terribly sorry about this. I am not even sure if we will make it to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (For the African championships) next month,” reads the e-mail in part.

HAM development coach and administration manager Benjamin Chaura confirmed the development on Wednesday, saying it is a blow as they had finalised all the logistics.

“All preparations were done on our side and a possible sponsor had confirmed,” said Chaura.

Last year, Zimbabwe’s Hippo Valley took part in the tournament and won it.
