Handball coaching course opens in Lilongwe

An International Handball Federation (IHF) coaching course for coaches in Malawi started on Tuesday at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe.

IHF has sent an instructor from German Klaus Feldman to facilitate the course which has drawn 15 participants from all the regions of Malawi.

“This is an Olympic solidarity course Level One. It is a basic course for coaches. I am teaching them basic principles of handball, so they can teach children at primary and secondary schools,” said Feldman.

The German has been in the coaching for over 33 years.

Handball Association of Malawi (HAM) general secretary Dennis Kumwenda expressed gratitude to IHF for organising the course.

“The course is timely and will further develop the sport at grass roots. Participants will be able to teach handball in their respective schools. For rapid growth of the sport, it is important that we have frequent international courses,” said Kumwenda.

The Malawi handball men’s team finished fourth in South Africa last month while the women side finished second. Ten teams took part in the tournament.
