Handball players start camping

Twenty-eight handball players from across the country have started camping at Domasi College of Education in Zomba on Monday in preparation for the 2012 International Handball Federation(IHF) tournament to be held in South Africa at the end of this month.

Malawi was invited for the tournament alongside Angola, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The tournament is expected to run for seven days starting from March 31.

Handball Association of Malawi (HAM) secretary general Denis Kumwenda said the association has selected only the cream of players in the country for the camping. He siad this is the first step in their quest to do well in South Africa.

Players that are in camp include Lissa Kazembe, Shira Phiri, Mervis Maloko, Precious Nkhoma, Shekile Mumba, Veronica Sangwati, Corefa Doxen, Liviness Gunde, Emmanuel Tembo, Bamusi Mpongo, Kingsley Bonwell, Wesley James, Steven Mhango, Joel Mwamadi, Mathews Chapola, Vincent Shombe, Steven Makumbi, Enock Kachomoza, Master Phiri, Tionge Kagwa, Ivy Pinto, Lucy Maseko, Lily Brown, Mercy Gondwe, Emily Kavina, Peter Nyirenda, Charles Chisale and Steven Harawa.

The squad also includes coaches Dryden Banda and Isaac Chinkonda who will be attending a course running alongside the tournament.

According to Kumwenda, the squad will be in camp for two weeks and will leave for South Africa by bus on April 28.
