Heavy winds last week blew off roofs of M’dinde Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) and a a girls’ hostel in Traditional Authority Katuli in Mangochi District.

The school’s head teacher Witness Gomera said the winds blew off roofs of three classroom blocks and a girls’ hostel.

“The winds were very strong and it was just by chance that no one got injured,” he said.

Gomera is worried that if maintenance works are not carried out soon, the situation will be worse once rain comes.

“Students will likely miss classes during the rainy season fast approaching,” he said.

“However, I particularly feel sorry for the girls. Many of them come from as far as 80 kilometres away and cannot afford to attend classes everyday from their homes. The hostel accorded them accommodation to stay close to school,” he said.

Member of Parliament for the area, (Mangochi East) Francesca Masamba Theula (Democratic Progressive Party-DPP) has appealed for urgent support from government and other stakeholders.

“This is the only school in my area which serves a bigger population. The disaster, therefore, has affected the students,” she said.
