Monday, on Valentine’s Day, many people will show their loved ones how much they love them, by showering them with gifts and tender loving words. Unfortunately, some people forget the true meaning of the day and expect nothing but presents from their loved ones. But, in actual fact, is giving not more fulfilling than receiving on this special day? Mwereti Kanjo asks around.

Half of one person’s joy is the experience of another person’s joy. When you make someone happy, it makes you happy too. When you give, you are both giving and receiving, but the feeling has to be mutual.

Getting angry with a loved one because they did not get you anything on Valentine’s Day shows childishness. People must be together because they love each other and not because the other one has money. Are you saying that without the presents you won’t love them? Most of the times, the heart wants to buy things for your wife but the pocket does not allow this. I say better to be with someone who will love you unconditionally than someone who will buy you gifts on Valentine’s Day then cheat on you.

Giving is better; even the Bible says so. When you truly love someone, all you want is to see them happy and giving them a present is one way of showing that you appreciate their love. But we must not make valentines all about presents, it means so much more. It is a day to show selfless love; spending time and bonding is more meaningful than a bouquet of flowers that will wilt after a day or too.
