Hotel rescues Malawi’s volley association

Riverside Hotel management has reduced their accommodation rate from K27 000 to K18 000 a room per night in support of the volleyball World Cup qualification games to be hosted by Malawi.

Riverside will accommodate over 150 guests from Zambia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia and Mozambique.

The hotel is the third firm within two days to support Volleyball Association of Malawi (VAM) in hosting the prestigious volleyball event.

Retail chain stores Santa Plaza and Seven Eleven are other companies that have come to VAM’s rescue.

Santa Plaza have pledged to buy uniforms for the local women’s and men’s teams whereas Seven Eleven will provide bottled water throughout the duration of the tournament.

“It is a great relief as we are going to save over K6.7 million for the five days the teams will be in the country. This will definitely ease the burden on government,” said VAM president Jappie Mhango.

He then appealed to other companies to assist in cash or kind.

“As I have said before, we embarked on a segmented sponsorship so that we share diverse needs of the team. The uniforms, accommodation and water have been taken care of. There is now need for other companies to help with the food and other needs of the teams. We plan to make the event a success,” said Mhango.

VAM has submitted a K16 million budget to Ministry of Sports, but government is yet to approve the funding.

Mhango said they decided to approach companies for assistance as part of VAM’s responsibility to make the qualification a success.
