Hotelier Alissa Makawa dies, burial Wednesday

The body of hotelier the late Alissa Makawa, who until her death was also board chairperson of Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra), will be laid to rest on Wednesday, at HHI Cemetery in Blantyre.

A statement from Macra says Makawa, a hotelier and long time businessperson, died on Monday morning at Blantyre Adventist Hospital after a short illness.

“Macra will sorely miss her humility, professional determination, commitment, generosity and enormous contribution to the development of the communications sector in Malawi in her stay as board chairperson,” reads the statement in part.

According to the statement, Makawa’s remains will be collected from College of Medicine (CoM) Mortuary at noon on Tuesday, and will be taken to her residence in Namiwawa, Blantyre.

President Peter Mutharika appointed Makawa into the Macra board on November 10 2014.

The late Makawa studied hotel management at the Malawi Institute of Tourism (MIT). She also did some hotel management training in Switzerland.

She worked for Malawi Hotels and Kamuzu College of Nursing in the catering department before going full time into family businesses founded by her late father, Alexander John Ashan.

Some of these businesses include Kambiri Lodge in Salima and Shire Highlands Hotel in Limbe, under the Alexander Hotels brand.

The late Makawa is survived by a son, John and daughter, Eda.

She hailed from Matapira Village, Traditional Authority Mazengera in Lilongwe.
