Housing initiative to support technical colleges—Chibingu

Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Paul Chibingu has unveiled plans to engage community technical colleges’ students in construction of houses under the K7 billion Decent and Affordable Housing Subsidy Programme (DAHSP).

This means students from the colleges across the country will have the opportunity to practice theory learnt in class while constructing the houses.

The revelation follows a request by Karonga District Council on behalf of technical students in the district, on Wednesday, that they be included in the construction process for hands on experience.

The council’s district commissioner (DC) Rosemary Moyo said the idea is for the two programmes to complement each other.

She said: “The first students at Ngara Community College, which was launched recently, are about to graduate.

“Those doing bricklaying, welding and fabrication want to be considered in this programme.”

Chibingu expressed gratitude that the two programmes have ignited excitement among the beneficiaries.

“The plea by the students means that these projects are complementary. This is what the President wanted to see in Malawi. We have no objection to the idea that the students should be engaged in the programme,” he told a meeting at Karonga District Council, which was reviewing progress of the programme in the district.

The Decent and Affordable Housing Subsidy Programme was launched in December last year to improve lives of low income and vulnerable households by providing them with descent houses.
