How Chilemba’s gamble on Miranda paid off

Struck by the awe-inspiring record of his challenger, Isaac Chilemba’s management team was against his Friday’s non-title light heavyweight fight which he eventually won on unanimous points decision over Colombian Edison Miranda in America.

Weekend Nation has established that it took Chilemba’s Malawian childhood mentor, Andson Kazembe, based in South Africa to give a nod to the fight at the Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“The team was scared. Another coach suggested that Chilemba should have two more fights before meeting Miranda,” said Kazembe who in 2003 discovered Chilemba playing football at Blantyre Youth Centre and coaxed him to boxing.

Chilemba is managed by South African Jodi Solomons, promoted/employed by American firm, DiBella Entertainment, trained in Johannesburg by Kazembe and American trainer, Dan Birmingham eights weeks before every fight.

“I am not beating my own drum here, but it was until Jodi asked me, finally, what I thought about Miranda. I did tell her it was going to be a tough fight, but Chilemba would win on points,” Kazembe noted about the bout which was beamed on Espn across the world.
