How Namibia’s Dillish won BBA’s $300 000

Won BBA’s $300,000: Dillish

Analysts from across the continent did not disappoint, but gave out votes to housemates that won their hearts.

But Africa had a different voice, Dillish Matthew who had the lowest nomination for possible victory carried the day at the end of the  91-day reality TV show on Sunday night.

It was not easy for her as she needed not only courage to sail through, but also a complete thoughtful strategy—traits, totally different from the rest of the housemates. She did it to become the third female winner after Zambia’s Cherise Makubale in the first edition and Nigeria’s Karen Igho in the sixth.

Dillish started the game as a proverbial underdog and was labelled several names from lazy to pampered princess to Barbie Doll, a nickname that even Big Brother picked.

“And the Barbie Doll wins,” were Biggie’s words on Sunday night after the pretty Namibian was announced winner of BBA The Chase.

She did not fight with anyone or sleep with any of the guys. The only time the Namibian got herself in trouble was when she had a disagreement with Nigeria’s Melvin.

Her victory therefore, sends a different message to the continent about the show. Africa looks for more than just drama and the 2013 edition goes in BBA’s file with the message that positive behaviour minus drama may equal to victory in a game of personalities such as BBA.

Her survival in the last eviction to the final against Bimp and Angelo sent a different message to both viewers and the remaining housemates and the undergraduate student could not also believe her luck. That was her fifth time on the eviction list and she survived.

Originally a Diamond housemate, the Namibian got a good comfort of the hate she suffered while in the house. Africa gave her five votes through Namibia, Angola, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Her runner up, Cleo got four votes from South Africa, Malawi, Zambia and Botswana. Elikem, Melvin and Beverly got three, two and one vote each respectively.

Are there any lessons learnt?

Michael Joll, a psychologist and counsellor at HIV and Aids Intervention (HAD) in Lilongwe who also follows BBA, said the 2013 edition has given a different impression of the show.

He said most of the housemates that win have been those involved in controversial manners and it affected the mentality of many housemates on what it takes to win.

“BBA is a game of psychology. It is all about thinking of how to impress and please the continent to save you from eviction. This has misled many housemates because the moment they try to entertain and impress, they lose focus and miss the prize.

“I believe Dillish has won because she chose to live a differently from others. Cleo was in almost same terrain that is why she also reached the final slot. Melvin also tried, but Dillish stood out more, especially that she survived almost all the romantic abuses in the house. It is not first time, Malawi’s Hazel did the same even though she failed to win,” said Joll.

Dillish was not the only winner of the night, Elikem won the most romantic housemate for his gesture of cooking breakfast and serving it in bed to Zimbabwe’s Pokello. He got a five-night, all expenses paid for stay in a luxury room at the Sarova White Sands Hotel in Mombasa, Kenya with a partner. He immediately shouted that he is taking Pokello with him and she accepted.

The Accra based fashion designer  also got  $10 000 and two return air tickets courtesy of  Rwanda Air as well as spending money.
