HR critical to growth—IPMM

The Institute of People Management Malawi (IPMM), a professional grouping of human resources practitioners, has said no firm can build a good team of working professionals without vibrant human resource management (HRM).

IPMM president Chrispin Chikwama said in an interview last week that HRM plays a key role in recruiting the right people, training them, preparing performance appraisals, motivating employees as well as facilitating workplace communication and safety, among others.

He was speaking on the sidelines of a dinner and dance in Blantyre.

Chikwama said there is need for organisations to invest in human resources (HR) to benefit from their skills and expertise crucial for negotiating group benefit packages for employees within the company’s budget and consistent with economic conditions.

He said: “Leaders with expertise in human resource strategic management participate in corporate decision-making that underlies current staffing assessments and projections for future workforce needs based on business demand.”

Chikwama said it is for this reason that IPMM has, for the past two years, been lobbying government to enact an HR bill into law to ensure there is order in the profession.

“The draft piece of legislation seeks to guide HR practice in Malawi. We want to bring order in the profession,” he said.

Speaking earlier, FDH Bank managing director Phillip Madinga noted that a majority of local companies do not recognise the importance of HR in their setup.

He said this has resulted in a number of problems, including poor communication between the employer and members of staff. n
