I am bowing out for real— Nyamilandu

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu has dismissed talk that his recent announcement that he would not seek re-election at next December’s election was merely about testing the waters.

“If people think it is not for real, they will be caught unawares. I have made up my mind,” said Nyamilandu, who had previously also hinted that he would not defend his position only to compete.

There has been talk by some critics that Nyamilandu’s assertions cannot be believed this time around. FAM constitution is open on the number of terms. He has served three four-year terms since 2004. Others claim that he is grooming other executive committee members to succeed him.

“That is none of my business. The people would choose. I do not even have anybody in mind. I want a free and fair election,” Nyamilandu concluded while dismissing talk that his decision was subject to FAM executive committee’s approval.

Nyamilandu, who is credited for winning back corporate sector support to football and Flames return to Africa Cup of Nations in 2010, but faulted for firefighting management style, could not even be drawn into commenting on the picture of his right successor.

FAM affiliates vote and only those with an academic diploma and minimum of five years of continuous football management experience can compete for the presidency, according to FAM constitution.

Dr. Henry Chibowa recently confirmed his interest to contest again.

Electorates have also thrown in the hat names such as Tiya Somba Banda, Jabbar Alide, Chiku Kalilombe and Dr. Dan Kuwali, who all, separately, insisted they are not interested.

On the next leader to take FAM forward, Chibowa said there is need for leaders who “must be the change they want to see.”
