I have rediscovered myself

She has always been Trizah Titus in the music industry until last month when she rebranded. She is now Nyago and has changed focus in the music she plays. Our reporter BRIAN ITAI caught up with Nyago to discuss the decision behind her rebranding and what necessitated the change.

Nyago: Music is my passion and my mission

Q

: Music lovers have known you as Trizah Titus. What inspired your rebranding?

A

: I named myself Trizah Titus. I realised I named myself Trizah Titus because I was ashamed of who I was. But recently when I found and fell in love with my true self I felt it was time to go back to my true self and embrace the real me. I later met my manager Qabaniso Malewezi and he asked me if I would like to rebrand so that my name should better suit the kind of music I was doing. I did not hesitate to accept; hence, the new name Nyago which is a short version of Nyagondwe.

Q

: How different is the music that you were doing before you rebranded to what you are doing now?

A

: Before rebranding, I was just singing whatever came to my mind, but now I am focused on Afro-spiritual music because I am a spiritualist. You have to sample some of my songs to appreciate what I am saying.

Q

: What are some of the gains and benefits you are targeting to achieve with this change?

A

: I would love to promote peace, love and oneness. We don’t even love ourselves these days. There is so much pain and hurt in our hearts because we are not true to ourselves. We pretend to be what we are not. My wish is that God should open our spiritual eyes so that we see ourselves in his light. And I hope to channel this energy to others through my music.

Q

: So far, how would you describe your artistic career?

A

: For me, music is my passion and my mission so I am enjoying my musical journey as I am gaining different experiences which keep me growing.

Q

: What has been the impact of the change to your fan base?

A

: I don’t think so. The whole point of rebranding is to stay true to myself so I’d love my followers to accept me for who I am. And I believe they will.

Q

: When are you releasing your first album as Nyago:

A

:  We are looking forward to releasing our first album as Nyago in May 2020.

Q

: Have you done any performances of your new music as Nyago? If yes where and when?

A

: Yes, I have done four performances so far. My first performance was at the US Embassy then I also made an appearance at gospel artist Shammah Vocalz album launch last month at Bingu International Convention Centre and two more performances elsewhere.
