Minister of Information, Tourism and Civic Education Jappie Mhango says access to information and communication technology (ICT) is a crucial factor in empowering rural communities to advance social-economic development.

He said this at Chiringa in Phalombe District on Saturday during a special visit to Chiringa Telecentre which is due to open in March next year.

The minister said technology investment in rural areas can create new types of economic activities, employment opportunities and enhance social interaction and networking among people.

“Access to basic telecommunication services is a basic right and one of the most important tools in the reduction of poverty in rural areas. Through a telecentre, people can access computers, the Internet, and other digital technologies that can enable them gather information, create, learn, and communicate with others while developing essential digital skills,” said Mhango.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Phalombe East Amosi Mailosi said the tele-centre will be useful for job hunting, commodity market searching and general communication.

Currently, there are 51 telecentres in the country. n
