Minister of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Nicholas Dausi on Wednesday launched the ministry’s official website in Lilongwe.

Speaking when he launched the website www.ict.gov.mw with the Department of e-Government in Lilongwe, Dausi said the website will, among other things, help create trust between government and citizens.

He said a government website can be a “first line of defence in emergency situations,” as it acts as a powerful tool to help create calm and control for residents.

Said Dausi: “This can help get more people to safety and direct emergency services personnel to areas that require help most. In fact, by creating a functional website with easy navigation, government will connect with the people and ensure that the public stays informed at all times.”

Malawi is currently facing various challenges such as cholera, fall armyworms and floods that continue to affect several parts of the country.

The minister said his ministry will ensure it secures resources to keep the website functional.

Some information technology (IT) gurus in the private sector have since commended the move, saying the website enhances the Access to Information (ATI) legislation.

In an interview in Lilongwe, head of IT at Technobrain Henry Kapasula said the website will contribute to the general development of ICT products and services through utilisation of technology in the country.
