“The overwhelming confirmations for participation indicates that chess is gaining more grounds in the region. The fact that schools such as Likangala, Bedir Primary, Southend, St Mary’s and Central High School are making their first appearance is very encouraging,” said SRCL schools coordinator Margaret Ngugama.

She said the seven-round competition, which will be divided into primary boys, primary girls, secondary boys and secondary girls categories, will use individual format.

Winners will walk away with trophies, medals and chess materials as the SRCL is focussing on equipping players with chess materials.

ICT Networks Limited managing director Lester Tandwe said his company is pleased to be associated with development of the mental sport in the country.

“ICT is associated with logical and analytical thinkers and so too is chess. We are a local technology company and we would like to promote chess,” Tandwe said.
