Idana revels in TNM Super League Awards

Nyasa Big Bullets midfielder Chimwemwe Idana has described the two awards he received during the TNM Super League 2020/21 Season Awards in Blantyre on Friday as a boost to his soccer career.

The youngster, who has so far played in the top-flight league for two seasons, was the toast of the night after bagging the Player-of-the-Season and the Best Midfielder awards that came along with a Mazda Demio and K200 000.

He was one of the five players that won individual awards at the ceremony. The others were his teammates Hassan Kajoke and Richard Chimbamba, who received the top-scorer and best goalkeeper’s accolades in that order. Nickson Mwase (Silver Strikers) was the best defender while Lloyd Njaliwa (Moyale Barracks) was the most improved player.

“I am humbled to win two individual awards in a competition that has over 400 players. This motivates me to work extra hard I thank Bullets management, the technical panel and team mates for their support,” he said.

In team awards, Bullets were the best managed team while Ekwendeni were named the team with the best technical panel. Moyale Barracks took the Fairplayaward while Karonga United FC were the most improved team.

In terms of match officiation, Evidence Kananji was named the best referee, Clement Kamwendo the best second assistant referee and Clemence Kanduku the best first assistant referee.

In media awards, Nation Publications Limited sports editor Garry Chirwa won the best columnist award (print and online) while Mabvuto Kambuwe (Times Group) won the best print journalist award.

Best online journalist honours went to Hastings Ndebvu (Soccer Malawi.com), Richard Issa (TV Islam) was best photographer (print, online and television) while Frank Kandu and Amin Mussa (MBC) were best radio and television journalists.

Super League of Malawi president Tiya Somba-Banda congratulated the winners.

He said: “Cream always comes at the top and individual brilliance will always be rewarded.

“A special recognition to Idana ‘Mr Demio’ for being voted Player-of-the-Season by his fellow players, coaches and supporters. It shows how exceptional he has been this season. He goes down in history as the first player to ever receive a motor vehicle in the country as an award for being the player of the season.”
