If I were: Emmanuel Fabiano

Minister of Education, Science and Technology, I would push to ensure that teachers’ grievances such as leave grants and salary increments are addressed.

If I were the minister, I would realise that despite the important role which teachers play in the development of the country, they get a raw deal and as the minister responsible, I would take it upon myself to fight for their welfare. Oh yes, if only I were Hon. Fabiano, I would realise teachers are also human and it pains them when they hear about parliamentarians and Cabinet ministers’ perks being reviewed while their loud cry continues to be ignored.

If only I were the minister responsible for education, I would appreciate that teachers too need to be motivated if they are to give out their best shot. Yes, your honour, I would realise teachers’ plight has the potential to affect education standards, and by extension, affect the development of the country.

I would also appreciate that it is a shame that there are even times when government delays to pay teachers when I and my Cabinet colleagues get ours in time, a situation which is grossly unfair. That is of course, if I happened to be Hon Fabiano, the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, unfortunately I am not.
