If I were

If I were: Peter Mutharika (13/03/2013)

President of Malawi’s former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), I would appreciate that the current economic problems that the country is facing started when my party was in power under the leadership of my late brother.

I would, therefore, appreciate that it is not fair to act as a Wiseman from the east now that it is President Joyce Banda’s government that has to address the problems.

Yes, while it is the current administration’s responsibility to offer solutions to the economic problems, I would surely appreciate the source of the current problems.

How I wish I were my good man Peter, because I would also realise that these problems were there when I used to ride in a helicopter long before I saw it wise to appreciate the people’s problems by travelling to local markets to buy bonya in a commuter minibus.

I would realise that other quarters will view my actions as a mere cheap political point-scoring.

If I were Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika I would also focus on issues in the countdown to next year’s presidential polls other than waste time on cheap finger pointing because the electorate expect me to state how I will get the country out of the current economic shambles should I be voted into power.

That is if only I were Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika. Unfortunately, I am not him!
