Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) says the third edition of the K150 000 Ifumbo Inter-College Individual Chess Tournament which rolls into action this Saturday at The Polytechnic in Blantyre, will be strictly for college students.

The two previous editions were open but SRCL chairperson Wasoka Chirwa yesterday said they would like to promote the sport in tertiary education institutions.

“Anybody wishing to take part in the latest edition of the contest will be required to first produce an identity card that authenticates them as college students,” he said.

“We have deliberately banished outsiders from the competition to seriously revamp and promote chess in colleges that are in our fold.”

Registration for the seven-round competition, which will start at 8am, is K1 000 per player and time control will be 30 minutes per player.

The winner in the open section will take home K50 000 while the runner-up, third-placed and fourth-positioned players will get K30 000, K20 000 and K10 000, respectively.

In the ladies’ category, the winner will receive K20 000 while the runner-up and third-placed individuals will get K15 000 and K5 000, in that order.

Fide Master Gerald Mphungu won the last edition in the open category in April this year while Ellen Mpinganjira did it in the ladies’ section. Precious Kamwendo and Jennifer Mwenewanda were the first champions in their respective categories in February.
