I nspector General (IG) of Police Lexten Kachama has said his officers are working hard to improve surveillance at roadblocks to detect dangerous weapons, including guns. Kachama’s statement comes at a time when some Blantyre residents are suspected to have been among armed robbers who staged a daylight robbery of K40 million (US$88 889) belonging to Petroda (Malawi) Limited in Lilongwe, killing a police officer in the process.

Kachama: We are putting in place new mechanisms

He said this last Thursday when he opened an interface meeting between police and Lilongwe business community. Said Kachama: “I must admit that of late we have been severely hit by criminals, but we are putting in place new mechanisms that will help us stop and detect robbers before they steal. We will also improve security at roadblocks so that dangerous weapons are intercepted.” Most speakers at the meeting commended police for a job well-done, citing recent arrests. Alfred Munika, regional community policing chairperson for the Centre, said despite lacking resources, police are doing a good job by foiling robberies and apprehending dangerous criminals.
