Immigration, MSB officials suspected of fraud

An Immigration Department officer and a Malawi Savings Bank employee in the northern Malawi district of Mzuzu were on Tuesday granted bail at the Mzuzu Magistrate’s Court after they were arrested for alleged fraud.

Police regional criminal investigations officer for the North, Maxwell Ngongonda, said fiscal police arrested the Immigration officer, Daniel Chitokoseni, on suspicion that he embezzled money meant for express passports.

He said on Wednesday the issue came to light following a complaint from Harvey Chiume over passport delays.

“Mr Chiume and his wife wanted express passports and they paid K70 000. However, they were surprised that the passports were not issued and they went to Immigration headquarters,” said Ngongonda.

He claimed that Chitokoseni connived with an MSB bank teller, Stella Kunsiya, to deposit less money and issue invalid receipts.
