Earlier in the year, Impakt Events chief executive officer Lucius Banda helped the league to raise K500 000 through a music show that took place at M1 Centre Point.

The league’s general secretary Ali Mwachande said in appreciation to Impakt Events’ gesture, the league will now be called Sand Festival Central Region Beach Soccer League.

“They have made a huge contribution towards the running of the  league.  It is only befitting that  we change the name to honour the sponsors, “ said Mwachande in an interview with The Nation.

Mwachande has since announced that the league will commence this Saturday at the Sunbird Livingstonia Beach in Salima.

“The league will be sponsored to the tune of K1 million.  This is a significant improvement from the K250 000 last season and we are grateful to Lucius Banda and Impakt Events,” he said.

On his part, Banda said he is looking forward to a long-term partnership.

“Will be monitoring how the league will be managed and come with something big next year zikayenda bho [if all goes well],” said the local music icon.

Beach Soccer Malawi (BSM) has since applauded Banda for coming to the rescue of the sport in the Central Region. “We have been struggling for years to find stable sponsorship.  This is very welcome news and as BSM we are grateful.  Our appeal to league organisers is to be transparent and ensure accountability so as to maintain the confidence of the sponsors,” said BSM general secretary David Sado yesterday.

He has since appealed to companies and individuals to finance the southern and northern leagues to promote the growth of the sport in the country. n
