Inch your way towards excellence

Being average or good enough no longer works. If you want to be your best, the only way is to start developing excellence. Here are some starting blocks to help you.

Focus on doing your best: You can never stumble your way into top performance. Move from being a person with potential to one that demonstrates talent. Find a way to get around your problems and stay focussed on what you want to achieve. When you are busy doing your best, then any goodwill that comes your way will provide additional lift.

Commit to at least one percent improvement: Always see yourself as a work in progress so you can improve consistently and raise the stakes. Record one improvement every day and measure the compound impact of that over a month. Ask yourself at the end of each day: “Was I better today than yesterday?” You’ll be amazed how much more you can achieve if you put your mind to it and do the work required.

Don’t let setbacks break your stride: Expect and prepare to deal with challenges that may come your way so that you are not totally knocked down when you meet the hurdles. When you get a raw deal, don’t get stuck there trying to figure out why it happened; make a plan to get past it.

Protect yourself from sabotage: This can come from different sources; toxic people and in many cases when you doubt yourself. Don’t sabotage your success by not addressing things that are in your way. If you act on the basis of what will please others you will live in the shadow of others instead of stepping into your own.

Avoid microwave mentality: Rid yourself of ‘instant results’ expectation. Advancement requires painstaking discipline, consistent positive action and doing the simple, very often unexciting things that put you on a firm foundation from which you can soar. Focus on building a system with the necessary tools to work toward your goals.

Now take action: What three simple steps can you implement to work towards excellence?
