The National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has said some Malawians’ tendency to keep quiet when elected leaders fail on their duties puts elected leaders are on holiday until the next election.

Southern Region Nice regional civic education officer (RCEO) Enoch Chinkhuntha was commenting in an in interview remarks by Senior Chief Chiwalo of Phalombe who doubted that councilors will facilitate the much-needed developmental projects in their areas.

Chiwalo told Weekend Nation last week that government could be wasting its resources by spending millions of kwacha on councillors’ honoraria.

Chinkhuntha said civic empowerment and active citizenship are of critical importance to ensuring that goals Malawians set for their leaders before elections are achieved.

The RCEO said the chief’s fears could be justified considering that Malawians have generally remained passive on political and governance issues.

“But this can be easily averted if we, as citizens, choose to actively participate in the running of affairs of the country. In fact, Nice Trust does not want to have a scenario where elected leaders should think they are holiday until the next election.
