Police in Chiradzulu are concerned with the increase in suicide cases, saying it is slowing down efforts to achieve excellence in safety and security issues.

Chiradzulu Police Station officer-in-charge Kenneth Semani said this at Thumbwe Community Ground in the district on Friday during an interactive football match between the police and members of Kadewere 2 Community Policing Forum.

“For the past months, we haven’t performed well in suicide cases because we have seen them increasing. This is a worrying situation and something needs to be done,” said Semani.

He mentioned jealousy, debt and illness as some of the common reasons that make people commit suicide in the district.

The police officer also warned communities to guard against human traffickers who entice people under the pretext of offering employment. He said such people should be reported to police or the office of the district commissioner.

Group village head (GVH) Nganga assured the police that everything will be done to make sure suicide cases are reduced in the area.

The event was organised to strengthen the relationship between the police and communities and sensitise them to safety and security issues.

After the football match, the police donated 20 reflector jackets, 20 torches and 20 whistles to the community policing forum. n
