Sports enthusiasts in the insurance industry will throng the College of Medicine’s Sports Complex on Saturday for this year’s edition of the Insurance Institute of Malawi (IIM) Annual Sports Day.

The sports event’s organising committee chairperson Mphatso Kamzingeni-Zulu on Wednesday said the day-long competition was meant to awaken sportsmanship spirit in IIM members.

“We are very excited that once again our members of staff and their families can get together in sports because as an institute, our aim is to promote professionalism and this can be achieved by, among other things, having healthy and sound minded workforce,” he said.

Games lined up for the day include football, netball, darts, relay race, egg throw, bawo, chess, netball and volleyball. Golf takes place today [Thursday] at Blantyre Sports Club. Peter Nkosi of Malawi Re won the 2011 golf championship.

The event, to be launched by IIM president Elias Chipungu, is growing each year with participants also drawn from the Reserve Bank of Malawi’s (RBM) Pension and Insurance supervision department.

RBM are netball and volleyball defending champions, while Malawi College of Accountancy insurance students, playing under the banner Mgwilizano, will defend their football gold.

“Just like last year, there is going to be a big party after prize presentation spiced up by Ndefeyo crew of Maskal, Piksy, Armstrong and Biriwiri. There is also going to be a disco by Maccogge. Exciting prizes plus medals have been lined up for the winners in various categories,” said Kamzingeni-Zulu.
