Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) has attributed its failure to provide uninterrupted water supply to intermittent power supply.

NRWB public relations manager Edward Nyirenda said the blackouts are affecting the institution’s pumping capacity and stability of its system to effectively supply water.

He said: “We are experiencing power outages on a daily basis and this is affecting our pumping capacity and stability of the system to effectively supply. For now, what we are doing is to pump as much as possible and store the water in our reservoirs when we have power supply.

“Unfortunately, this is summer time and the demand for water is very high such that within a few hours, most of our reservoirs are drained. In the medium to long term, we are exploring the possibility of supplementing power supply at our treatment plants and booster stations with solar power.”

He also refuted claims by some customers that the board is charging exorbitantly, saying the bills are determined by one’s consumption. n
