Irish Ambassador Aine Hearns has urged government to invest more in education, with a special focus on educating girls.
She made the call on Wednesday at Kaseye Girls Secondary School in Chitipa when she toured a project financed by well-wishers from the Republic of Ireland.
Hearns said government’s efforts in promoting education were appreciated, but more has to be done to ensure that educational institutions have a conducive environment for girls.
“When you commit resources towards girls’ education, you mould a nation of equality between men and women,” she said.
The ambassador deplored tendencies by some parents who discriminate girls in education provision, preferring boys.
A councillor from Dundalk Town in Ireland, Peter Savage, donated $53,875 (K24.2 million) to the school.
The financial assistance was used to construct a headmaster’s house, a girls’ hostel, Form Four classroom block, procurement of modern beds, television set, books and installation of solar panels.
Chitipa district commissioner Grace Zione Chirwa thanked the Republic of Ireland for its decision to complement government efforts in promoting education standards in the country.
