Is Tay Grin joining politics?

Listen to this article

Is the Malawian rapper Tay Grin going where angels fear to tread? Tongues are already wagging as the Two by Two rapper has recently been spotted at various rallies of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) where his mother, Jean Kalilani, is second vice-president.

After attending her mother’s address in Patricia Kaliati’s Mulanje West Constituency early this year; the rapper was on Sunday seen among the VIPs during a political rally addressed by DPP interim president Peter Mutharika in Thyolo. Clad in dark glasses and a black designer suit with a blue lapel, he was sitting between men  garbed in DPP colours on the executive bench.

In an interview, Tay Grin said the trend does not mean he is following the footsteps of Billy Kaunda, Joseph Tembo and Lucius Banda who rose on the wings of their music to become politicians.

“Are you trying to suggest that whoever attends a rally of a particular party has joined party politics? Just like every Malawian, I went to the Thyolo rally to listen to the party’s manifesto. That’s all,” said Tay Grin on Monday.

When asked whether he intends to join party politics in future, he simply said: “If that happens, definitely you will hear it.”

Currently, the president of Black Rhyno entertainment label, Tay Grin is the only Malawian hip hop artist to be nominated for the prestigious Channel O Music Awards.
