Association of Sunni Madrasah (Asum) has handed over K1.5 million agriculture equipment to Maula prison in Lilongwe to help in food production.

Speaking on Wednesday during the handover ceremony, the body’s relief officer Abdul Karim Nathanie said the donation followed a request from the prison authorities.

He said the organisation is in relief projects in agriculture, education, health and social work such as providing start-up loans to the underprivileged.

Maula Prison station officer Charles Nyangu said the donation will help make the prison become self-reliant.

“We have a garden where we produce foodstuffs such as vegetables for the inmates, but the challenge is that during dry season, production goes down due to lack of irrigation materials,” said Nyangu.

The donated items included 10 treadle pumps, fertiliser, seeds, notebooks and pens. n
