It’s not over, says Mafco coach

Mafco FC coach Tione Mhone is still optimistic of his team’s survival in the TNM Super League despite failing to collect maximum points at the weekend in Mzuzu where from a possible six they returned with one point.

The Salima-based Malawi Defence Force (MDF) outfit lost to fellow MDF side Moyale Barracks 0-1 on Saturday before a goalless draw the following day against Mzuzu University (Mzuni) FC.

Mafco are second from the bottom

The results mean Mafco are still stuck in the relegation zone on position 15 with 25 points from 27 matches and could be relegated if they will not win their three remaining games against Azam Tigers, Kamuzu Barracks and defending champions Be Forward Wanderers.

In a post-match interview on Sunday, Mhone refused to press the panic button, insisting that survival is a possibility.

“The results are painful, but people should not count us out. It’s not yet over. We still have three games to play at our backyard which we are sure we can win,” he said.

And reacting to the result, Mzuni FC coach Gilbert Chirwa described it as fair, saying Mafco came hard on them after losing the previous day to Moyale.

“They [Mafco] fought tooth and nail after losing to Moyale and a draw was a fair result,” he said.

Mzuni FC have moved up three places to seventh. They have 35 points from 28 games.
