Japan gives Dedza school K66m facelift

Japanese Government says the renovation of Kapalamula Primary School in Dedza worth $90 215 (K66.7 million)to improve education standards in Malawi.

Speaking during a contract handover ceremony at the Japanese Embassy in Lilongwe on Monday, Japanese Ambassador Satoshi Iwakiri said his government realises that human capacity development is the main driving force for a self-reliant economy.

In an interview, he said his government is committed to improving the education sector in Malawi; hence, it decided to  construct six classrooms, instal floors for already existing classrooms as well as buy desks at Kapalamula Primary School in Dedza District under the Grant Assistance for Grass-root Human Security Projects (GGP).

“My government is committed to helping Malawi grow the education sector as there are many challenges the country is facing. The people of Japan will continue working with Malawi,” he said.

Minister of Education, Science and Technology William Susuwele Banda said Malawi appreciates Japan’s gesture to improve infrastructure in the education sector.

He said the grant is a relief to the government and will contribute towards quality education in the country.

Susuwele Banda said: “We look at this donation as a way of transforming the school and education in the country. I am also putting emphasis on the community to be responsible in taking care of the resources provided to them.”

In a separate interview, Kapalamula Primary School head teacher Florence Donda commended the Japanese Government for the support to the school, saying the institution has insufficient classrooms.
