According to the Education Management Information System statistics (EMIS) of 2014, Malawi has about 1 000 public secondary schools, most of which have difficulties in providing basic secondary education because of shortage and deteriorated state of learning infrastructure.

“In order to address this gap, my government is providing Malawi with a grant approximately 1.8 billion Japanese yen to support in the re-construction and expansion of 11 selected schools,” said Nishioka in a press release.

He said the project would specifically facilitate the construction of administration blocks, library and classrooms, laboratories, multi-purpose halls, teachers’ houses, ground water supply system, photovoltaic power generation system and also the procurement of school furniture and laboratory equipment.

“Japan is committed to support the education sector for Malawi. In our assistance package for Malawi, we have identified secondary education as one of its key priority areas,” he said.

Nishioka has since called on all stakeholders to dedicate themselves and work together in implementing the project and reaffirmed that Japan would continue supporting the development of Malawi.
