The Japanese Embassy will on November 29 2014 organise an inaugural Ambassador’s National Kendo Championships at Blantyre Youth Centre.

According to Kendo Association of Malawi (KAM) president, Austinie Somba, the event will involve athletes aged between eight and 18 years in both boys and girls categories.

“We are thankful to the Japanese Ambassador His Excellency Shuichiro Nishioka for granting us this opportunity to expose the talent of our young athletes,” said Somba.

According to Somba, the competition’s prizes will be known later.

He said the junior’s contest will take place before national team matches between Malawi and Japan. Mayor of the City of Blantyre Noel Chalamanda is expected to grace the occasion.

Kendo is one of the world’s oldest sports disciplines founded in Japan. It was introduced in Malawi in the early 1990s by a Japanese national. Athletes use bamboo swords to outsmart each other.
