Japanese gold medallist to grace Olympic Marathon Day

Japanese Olympic gold medallist Naoko Takahashi will take part in the Olympic Marathon Day to be held at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on July 11.

This will be the first time the event will be held in Africa.

Mitsubishi Sokotoko, one of the sponsors of the event, announced the news   in Lilongwe at a press briefing.

“We are proud to have Naoko Takahashi join this event since she is a global figure,” said Seiji Inoue from Mitsubishi Sokoto.

Competitions for elite athletes on the day include a 42-kilometre full marathon for professionals, a fun run for amateur participants and track races within the stadium for men, women, children and paralympics.

Chairperson of the organising committee Kelvin Mmangisa said it is a great honour for Malawi to host such an event.

“Africa is hosting this for the first time and Malawi was chosen to stage the celebrations,” said Mmangisa, who was with Sports Council executive director George Jana and MOC president Oscar Kanjala.

The MOC president said the whole event will cost K45 million (US$1 million).

“We are appealing to all serious athletes to come and register,” said Kanjala.
